At Springfield, we believe education involves bothe the aquisition of knowledge and the development of intellectual curiosity, values and habits of mind that enable students to use that knowledge wisely. Guided by our Dominican heritage and inspired by our mission to care for the whole person, we prepare our students to think critically, act ethically and engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

We follow the National Senior Certificate (NSC) curriculum, with the Senior Phase of the General Education and Training (GET) programme in Grades 8 and 9 and the Further Education and Training (FET) curriculum in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Every learning experience, whether in the sciences, arts, humanities or even on the sports field, is designed to connect our local experiences with a global perspective.

Our Learning Philosophy

Curriculum Pathways

The subjects in Grades 8 and 9 provide a broad academic foundation for our students while encouraging academic exploration and the development of key skills required for the FET phase and beyond.

In Grades 10, 11 and 12, students take four compulsory subjects and choose three elective subjects.

Religious Education – which comprises timetabled classes, regular social justice sessions, singing and chapel services – is a feature in all grades.

In Grades 8 and 9, students take English Home Language, Afrikaans or isiXhosa at First Additional Language level, Mathematics, Life Orientation, two Creative Arts (Drama, Music or Visual Arts), Economic and Management Sciences, Natural Sciences (Physical Sciences and Life Sciences), Social Sciences (History and Geography), Technology (focusing on Coding and Robotics). Students who do not take isiXhosa at the First Additional Language level also learn isiXhosa as a Second Additional Language.
From Grade 10 onwards, students take English Home Language, Afrikaans or isiXhosa at First Additional Language level, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation. The elective subjects on offer are Accounting, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Geography, History, Information Technology, isiXhosa Second Additional Language, Life Sciences, Music, Physical Sciences and Visual Arts.

Alternative Timetable Days

Alternative Timetable Days are a distinctive feature of Springfield’s curriculum that create dedicated opportunities for students to engage deeply with important themes, real-world issues and experiences beyond the traditional classroom. These days promote deep engagement and social awareness, targeting content central to the Life Orientation curriculum and linking to our broader curriculum themes.

Alternative Timetable Days foster critical thinking, personal development and social awareness through engaging activities and educational outings, ultimately supporting our students’ holistic growth and active citizenship.
On these days, our students participate in creative activities, retreats and workshops and go on educational outings that take their classroom knowledge into the real world.

Academic Enrichment

Many learning areas extend their activities through participation in short courses, workshops, competitions and festivals. These enrichment opportunities are available at various points throughout a student’s high school career.

Many subjects participate in Olympiads, providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves alongside learners from across the country.
Specific opportunities are created for students in various subjects at different grade levels to apply and deepen their classroom learning. Toastmasters, the Shakespeare School Festival, Mol Day and English Alive are just a few of such activities on offer.
Subject outings take place to a diverse array of institutions and venues in and around Cape Town, including The Cape Town Science Centre, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument and many more.
Academic support – our dedicated academic support team assists students, parents and staff in identifying and implementing approriate support strategies to promote student success and wellbeing.

National Senior Certificate 2025 Matric Results

Springfield’s commitment to academic excellence is reflected in the achievements of our students. In 2025, the matric class achieved a 100% pass rate, with 98% of candidates qualifying for Bachelor’s degree study and earning 313 subject distinctions. Springfield was ranked among the top twenty schools in the Western Cape, with individual students receiving provincial recognition in Visual Arts and History.

While we celebrate these achievements, we are equally proud of all of our students who embrace the challenges of learning, grow in confidence and strive to achieve their personal best.

School Hours

Our school day is thoughtfully structured to support learning, routine and wellbeing. Classes run from the morning into the early afternoon, with supervised care available before and after school.
